The college football transfer portal continues to be a buzz of activity, especially now that most of this season’s games are behind us. A recent shocker comes from the Oregon Ducks, where freshman defensive back Cole Martin, as reported by Zachary Neel of Ducks Wire, made an unexpected announcement.

He stated, “On Tuesday afternoon, true freshman Cole Martin announced that he would enter the transfer portal after this year and look for a new school. Martin is the son of Oregon cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin, and was viewed as a major piece of the Ducks’ future in the secondary.”

This move raises eyebrows, especially when considering Martin’s familial ties within the Oregon football program.

Martin put together a solid all-around freshman season for the Ducks. He recorded 21 total tackles to go along with a defended pass and an interception.

In recent days, Pac-12 teams have been making headlines, with Washington making its way to the national title game and USC Trojan wide receiver Dorian Singer also making his way into the transfer portal.

The departure of an Oregon assistant coach’s son from the program was certainly unexpected, but it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the transfer portal. Now, Martin will embark on a quest for new opportunities elsewhere.
