Packers Acquire Intriguing Weapon For Jordan Love In Trade Proposal With Panthers

The Green Bay Packers are keeping all of their options open when it comes to the tight end position. The plans that they entered training camp with have to be adjusted as Tyler Davis suffered a devastating knee injury in the first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Davis tore his ACL, which ended his season before it even began. It leaves the Packers dangerously thin at tight end, especially with Josiah Deguara taking over as the fullback/H-Back hybrid in the team’s offense.

Right now, the depth chart includes rookies Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft and Austin Allen. Allen has a chance to seize the role that was meant for Davis as the team’s No. 1 blocking tight end. But, Packers’ are keeping their options open at the position.

That could include acquiring a more established option from outside the organization. One player who could be of interest to Green Bay is Ian Thomas of the Carolina Panthers. Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report recently put together a piece detailing one trade each team in the NFL should propose.

For the Panthers, it was sending Thomas to the Packers. It is a deal that would make sense as Thomas may no longer be needed in Carolina. The Panthers signed Hayden Hurst to take over as their No. 1 option as a safety net for Bryce Young. With Tommy Tremble on the roster, Thomas is expendable.

With the Packers, his limitations as a receiver wouldn’t hurt the team. Thomas had 333 receiving yards during his rookie season, but has totaled only 666 yards in the four seasons after.

Green Bay will be counting on Musgrave to fill the pass-catching role in their offense. Instead, Thomas could do what he does best and be an in-line tight end that helps in the blocking game. That is what the team needs most after Marcedes Lewis left in free agency and Davis got hurt.

With five years of NFL experience under his belt, Thomas would be an excellent addition to the Packers. It shouldn’t cost much to acquire him, either, as the Packers could probably land him in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
