One of the biggest stories in the NFL lately has been the seemingly improbable rise of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. He has gone from the last player chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft and a third-string QB, to an emergency starter late last season, a quality starter this year and now an MVP candidate.
He became a true MVP candidate and possibly even a favorite with a 314-yard, four-touchdown, zero-interception passing performance in a 42-19 beatdown of the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. It was the fourth time this season he had thrown for at least three touchdowns and no picks.
Meanwhile, another young QB by the name of Jordan Love had been struggling for much of this season. He took over under center for the Green Bay Packers after future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers was traded during the offseason, and until recently, many have been growing skeptical he could be a true franchise signal-caller.
But he turned some heads by leading the Packers to a 27-19 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. He threw for three touchdowns and no interceptions, tying him with Purdy for the most such games in 2023.
NFL News & Rumors: Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers, Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers Updates
Even before Rodgers won his two most recent regular season MVP awards, Green Bay took Love with the No. 26 pick in the 2020 draft. Love barely played in his first three seasons, and he threw 10 interceptions in his first nine games this year.
But he may be starting to get the hang of the NFL, and not coincidentally, Green Bay has started to turn things around. After losing six of its first nine games, it has a three-game winning streak and is very much in the hunt for a playoff spot, as it is currently in seventh place in the NFC.
If Love were to continue playing well and actually take the Packers to the playoffs, it would be a hugely positive sign for his future and possibly even one of the more underrated moments in the team’s storied history.
