The Green Bay Packers entered the 2023 NFL Draft once again needing some weapons. The need was even more dire this year as they don’t have Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to bail them out when running into issues.
Virtually every mock draft had the Packers selecting a wide receiver or tight end in the first round. But, in typical fashion, the Green Bay front office zigged when people expected them to zag. With the No. 13 overall pick, the Packers selected Iowa defensive end, Lukas Van Ness.
But, in the second round, the Packers finally addressed their need for a pass catcher. With the No. 42 overall pick, which was acquired earlier this week in the Rodgers trade with the New York Jets, Green Bay selected Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave.
Musgrave had a borderline first-round grade on him, which makes snagging him in the early part of the second round excellent value. When that value matches up at a position of need, it is a major win.
While he wasn’t able to showcase it often, he is a mismatch waiting to happen. Because of that, he drew an interesting Pro Comp of Darren Waller. Waller has two 1,100+ yard seasons under his belt in his career and if Musgrave can approach that Pro Bowl level, the Packers are going to be ecstatic.
The biggest knock against the former Beaver is his inability to stay on the field. In four collegiate seasons, Musgrave played in only 20 games, catching 47 passes for 633 yards and two touchdowns.
While that is certainly less than ideal, there is a lot to like when it comes to what Luke Musgrave has to offer. He has excellent athleticism and that will show up even more once he adds some strength as well.
