Packers Working Out Interesting Veteran Free Agent WR

The Green Bay Packers have had to overhaul the wide receiver position over the last two offseasons. In 2022 it was Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling who departed via trade and in free agency. This year it was Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb who joined the New York Jets along with Aaron Rodgers.

Those departures have left the Packers dangerously thin on experience at the wide receiver spot. There is a good chance that the top-three options in the passing game are Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, who are heading into Year 2, and Jayden Reed, a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Those players possess immense potential and will be relied upon to fill major roles this upcoming season. However, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to add a little bit of experience to the mix. It would not only help the young players develop but make the transition for Jordan Love from backup into starter a little easier.

While the top options at the position are off the board, the Packers are still doing their due diligence when it comes to sifting through options. They have brought in one of those available veterans today for a workout, looking to catch lightning in a bottle.

Keke Coutee visited Green Bay today for a workout. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network provided the update, adding that he could be an option for the team as a punt return man on special teams.

Coutee hasn’t had many opportunities to make much of an impact thus far in his NFL career. He spent his first three seasons as a professional with the Houston Texans before spending the last two with the Indianapolis Colts.

In five seasons he has appeared in only 33 games, catching 85 passes for 966 yards and four touchdowns. All but two receptions and 25 yards came in his first three seasons with the Texans, as he has been a non-factor in 2021 and 2022. He has only 35 offensive snaps played in the last two seasons.

The Texas Tech product is still only 26, but it would be hard to imagine him breaking into the Packers’ lineup on offense. He did manage to average 8.9 yards per punt return last season, as he could provide the team with some value as a special teams contributor. If Green Bay is seeking a veteran to help the young guys along offensively, they could be better off looking elsewhere.
