The New England Patriots look like a team that should be sellers ahead of the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline. At 2-6, their chances of making a run at a playoff spot are slim to none. There hasn’t been much evidence of the team being capable of turning things around following a 31-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 8.
While Bill Belichick won’t throw the towel in on the season, it would not be surprising if the Patriots looked to move a few veteran players ahead of the deadline to recoup some future draft capital.
One of the players who could reportedly be had is edge rusher Josh Uche. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Patriots would be open to trading him and have held some conversations with teams around the league.
Uche, who is 25 years old, is in the final year of his rookie contract. After the Washington Commanders traded Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears, Graziano hypothesized that teams would pivot to Uche as a Plan B. There are some concerns about his health, but it doesn’t sound like anything major.
A second-round pick out of Michigan in the 2020 NFL Draft, Uche had a monster 2022 season when he recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks. He has yet to be as productive this season, registering only 2.5 as his playing time hasn’t increased.
There are some concerns about him holding up as a run defender and setting the edge, which has led to a situational role in New England. He has played only 36 percent of the defensive snaps this season after playing 38 percent last season.
Any team looking to bolster their pass rush should give Uche a look. He can certainly get after the quarterback, making him a solid complementary piece for a contending team seeking a rotation pass rusher.
