Last offseason, the Detroit Lions made a significant move aimed at fortifying their struggling secondary by acquiring safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson from the NFC Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, following a season marked by injuries, Gardner-Johnson’s future with the Lions seems uncertain, with indications suggesting a potential return to Philadelphia.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles are keen on reacquiring Gardner-Johnson in free agency to reinforce their secondary. Fowler also noted the interest from other teams eyeing the veteran safety.

“A C.J. Gardner-Johnson reunion in Philadelphia is on my radar,” Fowler wrote. “The Eagles realized they missed the talented safety in the secondary. Tennessee makes sense for him, too. Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is a big fan of Gardner-Johnson from their Philly days.”

Speculation from insiders suggests Gardner-Johnson is unlikely to remain with the Lions in 2024. Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network has even predicted a potential move to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the seasoned safety.

Meanwhile, Vito Chirco of SI.com assessed Detroit’s prospects of retaining Gardner-Johnson, suggesting it may hinge on the terms of his desired contract for the upcoming season. Chirco anticipates the Lions may entertain a short-term deal but might balk at matching long-term offers.

Considering Gardner-Johnson’s past contributions to the Eagles’ defensive prowess, reuniting with him could be a prudent move for Philadelphia. His impact during their Super Bowl campaign underscores his potential to revitalize the defense, especially under the guidance of Vic Fangio, who now oversees the unit.
