Eagles Must Still Address These Two Needs At Trade Deadline

As the NFL nears the midway point of the 2023 season, it looks like the Philadelphia Eagles are arguably the best team in the league right now. They have a 7-1 record, which is the best record in pro football, and they’re slowly but surely starting to take things up a notch.

After defeating the extremely potent Miami Dolphins 31-17 in Week 7, they put down the Washington Commanders 38-31 on Sunday.

However, even though they’re starting to roll, the Eagles still have room for improvement. With the Oct. 31 trade deadline fast approaching, Zachary Roberts of Sportskeeda identified two specific positions that could use some bolstering, starting with the linebacker spot.

“Linebacker is a bit of a weak spot on the Eagles defense, if such a thing even exists,” wrote Roberts. “Haason Reddick is a good pass-rusher, but doesn’t provide as much off ball. Zach Cunningham is a good player as well, but it’s not a terribly strong unit overall. This is one that can be upgraded by adding someone like Josey Jewell from the Denver Broncos or Jordan Hicks from the Minnesota Vikings.”

Philly’s defense, which was one of its strong suits last season when it got to the Super Bowl, is lacking a bit this season in terms of defending the pass. It ranks near the bottom of the pack in passing yards and touchdowns allowed, and bringing in someone who can provide more pressure on opposing quarterbacks would certainly help.

It already brought in somewhat of an upgrade in safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans, but more help would be welcome.

Roberts also feels the team could use added depth in the backfield offensively.

“Simply put, running back is not a weak spot for the Philadelphia Eagles,” wrote Roberts. “D’Andre Swift is a good player who’s thriving behind their offensive line. Kenneth Gainwell is a solid backup, too. Nevertheless, depth and more talent is never a bad thing. They could look at Dalvin Cook as a former Pro Bowler desperately in need of better blocking. Derrick Henry is enticing, and they could even get Miles Sanders back after a poor start with the Carolina Panthers.”

Cook is rumored to be available, as the New York Jets have barely gotten him any touches this season. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons and is reportedly unhappy with his diminished role this year.

Last season, Sanders put up 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns while earning his first Pro Bowl nod. His production has fallen off considerably this year, and perhaps a return to the Delaware Valley would revive his game.
