On March 6, the Buffalo Bills made significant changes to their roster by parting ways with several veteran players, including Tre’Davious White, a former All-Pro cornerback. That could be a major plus for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This move not only opened up considerable salary cap space but also hinted at a larger restructuring of the team. However, according to Noah Strackbein of SI.com, it might also present an opportunity for a conference rival to bolster their lineup.
Strackbein speculated that the Pittsburgh Steelers could seize the chance to acquire White, addressing a pressing need in their secondary with a potentially cost-effective acquisition.
“The Steelers are searching for a starting cornerback opposite of Joey Porter Jr., and have been named contenders for almost every available player at the position this offseason. However, if White is cheap, and healthy, he may make the most sense. Look for the Steelers to at least look into White once free agency opens, and depending on how the market shakes out, they could view him as one of their top options to sign.”
With the Steelers already identified as seeking cornerback assistance this offseason, White could fit the bill perfectly. Despite his recent Achilles injury, which raises questions about his immediate availability, White could offer the Steelers a dependable option at a reasonable price point, Strackbein suggested.
During the 2023 season with the Bills, White ended up playing in just four games. He racked up 12 total tackles to go along with an interception and two defended passes.
If he can get back to full health and stay there, White would be a massive addition for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense. That is a big “if,” but it’s one that the Steelers could be willing to gamble on.
