Kenny Pickett and the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to cobble together a surprising Week 5 win over the Baltimore Ravens, improving to 3-2 and jumping into a first-place tie with the Ravens in the AFC North.
Technically, the Steelers are actually in first place by way of the tiebreaker.
Afterward, Pickett was happy with what he called a “team effort” and an “ugly win.”
The Steelers entered the fourth quarter down 10-3, but a safety and a few key drives produced 14 points for Pittsburgh in the final frame to push the club to a big home victory.
Pickett went 18-for-32 with 224 yards and a key fourth-quarter touchdown in the win. While it certainly wasn’t a pretty performance by Pickett, it was still impressive given the fact that he had sustained a knee injury the week prior. Plus, the young signal-caller had taken a lot of criticism in recent weeks, with some questioning whether or not he as truly the Steelers’ quarterback of the future.
On the season overall, Pickett has thrown for 1,027 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 59.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 78.8.
The 25-year-old, who actually played his collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh, was originally selected by the Steelers with the 20th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
He made 13 appearances and 12 starts during his rookie campaign and was wholly uninspiring, finishing with 2,404 yards, seven touchdowns and nine picks while completing 63 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 76.7.
This was a pivotal game for Kenny Pickett, who may be running out of time to prove himself as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback.
The Steelers will have a bye next week before heading out west to take on the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 22.
