The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting set to battle the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, so free agency is surely the furthest thing from their minds at the moment.
However, the offseason is approaching whether we like it or not, and the Steelers being in the postseason won’t stop people from speculating what they will do in March.
Pro Football Focus is already linking Pittsburgh to one of the top defensive players on the market, listing the Steelers as one of the top potential destinations for Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
There might be a bit of a snag here, though.
Johnson is projected to earn one of the biggest contracts of any defensive players this offseason, but Pittsburgh is not going to have much cap room at its disposal.
It’s hard to envision how the Steelers will make room for Johnson, even though they could certainly use a talent like his to improve their 21st-ranked pass defense.
Plus, Johnson would apparently prefer to remain in Chicago anyway.
Johnson just enjoyed the best season of his career with the Bears, registering 36 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble, 10 passes defended and a defensive touchdown in 14 games. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection for his efforts.
The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Utah, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
While he has had some difficulty staying healthy (he has never played a full season), Johnson has proven that he is one of the better cornerbacks in football when he is on the field.
The Steelers went 9-8 this year, snatching the final Wild Card spot in the AFC. They reeled off three straight wins to end the season in order to punch their ticket into the playoffs.
