Steelers Projected To Make Massive QB Move In Offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have a quarterback conundrum on their hands this offseason.

Mason Rudolph is currently finishing out the 2023-24 campaign under center for the club, having replaced the injured (and struggling) Kenny Pickett.

Pickett is expected to retake his starting job next season, but it’s not like he has given the Steelers a whole lot of reasons to fully commit to him moving forward.

So, could Pittsburgh go in a different direction after this season concludes? Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports thinks so.

Benjamin is projecting that the Steelers will sign Russell Wilson—who is expected to be released by the Denver Broncos—to a three-year, $90 million contract this offseason.

Wilson was benched by the Broncos heading into Week 17 after he refused to deter his $37 million injury guarantee.

It’s not that Wilson was playing bad football this season. Quite the contrary, as a matter of fact. In 15 starts, the 35-year-old has thrown for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98.

However, Wilson has clearly not meshed with first-year head coach Sean Payton, and his $245 million contract is not something the Broncos want on their hands long term.

As a result, Denver will most likely cut Wilson after the season. If and when that does happen, Wilson will be one of the top commodities on the free-agent market, and it would not be the least bit surprising if the Steelers come calling.

Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler and has a Super Bowl title under his belt, so perhaps a change of scenery is exactly what the veteran needs.

Pittsburgh is 8-8 and will take on the Baltimore Ravens in its season finale this Sunday. It needs a win over the Ravens and some help elsewhere to secure a playoff berth.
