The New York Jets are patiently waiting things out when it comes to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. A New York contingent flew to meet with him in person last week and the team came away with the impression that it was only a matter of time until Rodgers would accept a trade to the Jets.
While there has been no confirmation of a deal being made, a lot of the moves that the Jets are making would indicate that they are confident about eventually landing Rodgers. They are seemingly operating under the assumption that Rodgers will be leaving the Packers and joining them.
That is likely part of the reason that the Jets are one of the teams connected to veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jets, along with the Las Vegas Raiders, are among the teams showing interest in Lewis.
Lewis isn’t much of a threat as a receiver anymore, catching only six passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games last season. But he would bring leadership and experience to the Jets’ locker room and remains an effective blocker. Heading into Year 18, Lewis remains reliable as he missed only one game in the last five years.
This is noteworthy because New York is going above and beyond to create a situation that would seemingly appease Rodgers. Lewis has spent the last five seasons with the Packers and is going on 39 years old, but is someone that the Jets have set their targets on.
He is far from the only player that Gang Green has spoken to that has connections to Rodgers and Green Bay. Things are shaping up as a Packers reunion, as the Jets have also been working toward a deal with free agent wide receiver Allen Lazard.
In addition to Lewis and Lazard, the Jets have also spoken to veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb. There is no reason the Jets, who have Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore and Corey Davis already on the roster, would be showing any interest in a player such as Cobb unless Rodgers was coming to town.
In addition to the players being sought after in free agency, the Jets have Nathaniel Hackett on their coaching staff as offensive coordinator. Hackett was the OC for the Packers when Rodgers won his most recent MVP awards in 2020 and 2021.
