Raiders Showing Interest In Intriguing Free Agent Cornerback

The Las Vegas Raiders made a number of moves this offseason looking to upgrade their roster. The team should be much improved as Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels revamped things to better fit their image. They relied heavily on their New England Patriots roots, bringing in players they have a history with.

Las Vegas’ defense should be improved this season after registering only 27 sacks in 2022, ranking 26th in points scored and 28th in yardage allowed. They should be much improved with the additions that were made, but the team may not be done adding players.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to bring in some more reinforcements in the secondary. Right now, Nate Hobbs, Duke Shelley and David Long Jr. are expected to be the starters. The depth behind them is a bit concerning as counting on fourth-round pick Jakorian Bennett to contribute in a large role right away is risky.

That likely explains why the Raiders were hosting a free agent on Monday. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, veteran cornerback, Marcus Peters was in Las Vegas for a meeting with the team.

Peter has been linked to a few different teams in hypotheticals, with the New York Giants topping that list. After spending time in Wink Martindale’s defense with the Baltimore Ravens, it would make sense for him to land with Big Blue.

But, if all went well with the Raiders, Peters could be calling Sin City home for the 2023 season. He is coming off a tough 2022 campaign, the first in his career he failed to record at least three interceptions in a season.

It was his first time back on the field since tearing his ACL during the 2021 season, so there was likely some rust to knock off. Now another year removed from the injury, there is a chance Peters returns closer to the form we have become accustomed to seeing him perform at.

That would be very beneficial to the Raiders, whose passing defense was bad last season. Things aren’t going to get any easier this year as they have to deal with Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Russell Wilson in their own division.
