Rams, Colts Interested In Sleeper Defensive Line Prospect

Brodric Martin, Rams, Colts

For the first time in a long time, the Los Angeles Rams are going to be active during the NFL Draft. They have 11 selections in the upcoming draft, which is the most of the Sean McVay era. While they are lacking premium selections, as they don’t have a first-rounder and eight of them are in the fifth round or later, this is a great chance for Los Angeles to replenish their roster.

For years the Rams have operated as a team that didn’t emphasize the draft. They would spend draft capital at an alarming pace, acquiring established veterans. While it did pay off for the ultimate prize, as they won a Super Bowl, they are now feeling the repercussions of those decisions.

The Rams certainly needed the change in philosophy that general manager Les Snead made mention, as 2023 is a reset year for the franchise. While a full-blown rebuild could be in store, they will make do with what they have right now.

While 11 draft picks are a lot, it would not be shocking if the Rams used almost all of them. The depth chart on defense beyond Aaron Donald is almost unrecognizable with Bobby Wager, Leonard Floyd and Jalen Ramsey all moving on this offseason. It should come as no surprise that they have been linked to numerous defenders in the pre-draft process.

One player to keep an eye on is defensive tackle Brodric Martin out of Western Kentucky. Brodric met with the Rams earlier this week and his name is beginning to garner a lot of buzz. He has also met with the Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts and will meet with the New York Giants.

Martin looks the part of a traditional two-down interior lineman. He can be a space-eater in the middle given the fact he is virtually unmoveable in one-on-one situations and can more than hold his own against double teams.

His size and strength are his most impressive attributes as those alone will help him garner some looks late in the draft. But, he will be limited to mostly early down and run situation work given his lack of athleticism and burst.

Without pass-rushing chops, it is hard to envision Martin being more than a run-stuffer in the NFL. But, that is a role we have seen players thrive in and create lengthy careers out of. There is a spot for him on an NFL team. One that is lacking depth as much as the Rams are could find the time to try and develop his skill set beyond just being a space eater as well.
