The Baltimore Ravens are coming off of a stellar 2023 season. They had the best record in the NFL, leading to them hosting an AFC Championship Game for the first time in franchise history. Alas, that wasn’t even enough to get them over the hump and into the Super Bowl.
They were defeated by the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, getting them started on their offseason preparations a few weeks earlier than they had hoped. Part of those preparations will be pinpointing where they need changes on the roster to get over the hump.
One of the positions could be at running back. General manager Eric DeCosta had said he hoped to bring back some of his free agents, such as Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, but that hasn’t been the case.
Edwards signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers on the first day of the legal tampering period. That leaves a hole on the team’s roster, as Edwards was their best running back in 2023 as he had a career season.
NFL News & Rumors: Derrick Henry, 2024 NFL Free Agency, Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens Updates
Who could Baltimore turn to as a replacement for Edwards? One possible option is veteran Derrick Henry, formerly of the Tennessee Titans. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Henry spoke to multiple teams on Monday, including the Ravens. However, nothing is considered imminent on the Henry front.
Henry may not be as dominant as he was once, as his yards per game average has decreased in four straight seasons. But, he would be a great fit for early-down work in Baltimore as a replacement for Edwards.
After facing stacked boxes with all eyes on him throughout his career, playing in the same backfield as Lamar Jackson would likely open up running lanes he has only dreamed of. The Ravens have squeezed production out of veterans such as Latavius Murray, De’Vonta Freeman and Kenyan Drake in recent years and could do the same with Henry.
