The Baltimore Ravens have been one of the quietest teams in the NFL thus far this offseason. All of their focus has been on the Lamar Jackson situation, which oddly remains unresolved. A former MVP with the success that Jackson has had on the field would normally be sought after, but he remains without a market or clear future.
With that up in the air, Baltimore has done very little with its roster. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor is the only player that wasn’t on the Ravens last season that has been added to the roster thus far.
It does make some sense that the team has been relatively inactive. When Jackson is healthy, this is a playoff team with the upside to be Super Bowl contenders. But, if he isn’t going to be on the team in 2023, it makes sense to take a more cautious approach as a reset would be on the horizon.
Eventually, some players will have to be signed to help fill the voids that were created by contracts ending and players being released. One of those holes is along the defensive line where Calais Campbell had been for the last three seasons before being released this offseason.
To fill that veteran void on the defensive front, one free agent who is the perfect fit is Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney had a very tough 2022 season with the Cleveland Browns as he didn’t see eye-to-eye with defensive coordinator Joe Woods. After a very successful 2021 season playing opposite Myles Garrett, Clowney’s pass-rushing production plummeted last season.
Looking for a fresh start, joining the Ravens could be motivating for the former No. 1 overall pick. He would get to face off against the Browns twice a season and they have emerging young pass rushers that would benefit from the presence of Clowney.
At the very least, the Ravens would be getting a veteran that can replace the impact that Campbell brought to the table. Even if Clowney isn’t racking up pass-rushing stats, he is an excellent run defender setting the edge.
