When the Green Bay Packers open up the 2020 NFL season, they are hoping that a wide receiver or two will step up and provide them with what they were missing last season. That would be a solid and consistent threat behind Davante Adams. Reggie Begelton may not be talked about much, but he could be someone to keep a close eye on.
Now that the Packers are in full training camp mode, Begelton has already been making some noise. He was signed early on in the offseason and no one paid much attention.
Our own Evan Massey had the chance to interview Begelton earlier this offseason. Begelton is highly motivated and is ready to make an impact for the Packers.
Matt Schneidman of The Athletic opened up a bit on what he has seen from Begelton. He seems to think that Begelton could end up being the slot wideout for the Packers if he continues playing the way he has thus far in camp.
It’s only one practice, but Begelton looks like he could be an intriguing addition if he makes the 53-man roster.
He made a couple of contested catches Saturday and looks fluid running routes across the middle. The best-case scenario is he becomes that reliable slot receiver the Packers so badly lacked in 2019.
Begelton came from the Canadian Football League, where he was a star for the Calgary Stampeders. He racked up 102 receptions for 1,444 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
Standing in at 6-foot-0 and 200 pounds, Begelton isn’t the biggest wideout from a physical standpoint. But, as Schneidman points out, he brings speed to the field. That was something that the Packers needed a lot more of last season.
Here is a video of Aaron Rodgers finding Begelton on a nice route in training camp:
There is no question that Begelton has the work ethic and motivation to be great. However, he simply needs the opportunity. Rodgers seems to have a good chemistry with the young wide receiver already.
Expect to continue hearing more about Reggie Begelton as training camp progresses. He may not end up earning the slot receiver role, but it certainly is a possibility.
Begelton is providing the Packers with some hope at wide receiver and it’s something that should excite the fans and Rodgers.
