The Dallas Cowboys are actively exploring various options for their next defensive coordinator, aiming to fill the void left by Dan Quinn’s departure. One notable candidate in their search is former NFL head coach Rex Ryan.

Reportedly, Ryan has engaged in discussions regarding the defensive coordinator position with the Cowboys, as revealed by NFL insider Josina Anderson. Ryan’s hiatus from football began after his dismissal from the Buffalo Bills during the 2016 season.

During the early 2000s, Ryan established himself as a prominent figure in defensive strategy. His tenure as the defensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens saw him contribute to a Super Bowl victory in 2000. Furthermore, he orchestrated the Ravens’ formidable defense, which ranked among the top six in the league consistently from 2005 to 2008.

However, it was Ryan’s tenure as head coach of the New York Jets that truly solidified his reputation. In his initial two seasons with the Jets, he guided the team to consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances while overseeing the league’s top-ranked defense both years.

Despite this early success, Ryan’s later years with the Jets were marked by a lack of sustained achievement. He endured a string of non-winning seasons in his final four years with the team, culminating in his dismissal after the 2014 season.

Subsequently, Ryan’s coaching career continued with a brief stint at the helm of the Buffalo Bills, where he achieved a modest record of 15-16 over two seasons.

In recent years, Ryan has transitioned into a media role, primarily working with ESPN alongside avid Jets supporter Mike Greenberg.

Nevertheless, speculation suggests that a return to the NFL fold, this time as a defensive coordinator rather than a head coach, could offer Rex Ryan a fresh opportunity to reignite his coaching prowess.
