REPORT: Cowboys May Consider Blockbuster Running Back Trade

Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys
NFL Analysis Network

Earlier this week, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that his team would not be placing any calls ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline and that if a deal were to occur, it would be the result of another team reaching out to Dallas.

Well, apparently, the Cowboys may have gotten a call from the Tennessee Titans, as they have been rumored to be a sleeper team in the Derrick Henry sweepstakes.

While Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda.com feels that the Baltimore Ravens are the favorites to land Henry if the running back is moved before the end of the month, he says that Dallas may be looming and may even be willing to eat some of the remainder of Henry’s contract (which is estimated to be around $9 million).

The Cowboys seemed comfortable going into the season with Tony Pollard as their featured back, particularly after the 26-year-old made the Pro Bowl a year ago.

However, Pollard has been disappointing through Dallas’ first six games of 2023, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry. The Cowboys have Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn behind him, but neither halfback inspires much confidence.

Taking those factors into consideration, it’s no surprise that Dallas may be interested in Henry, who is in the final year of his deal with the Titans.

Tennessee is 2-4 and has already traded away star safety Kevin Byard, so it seems like the club is, in fact, in sell mode with the deadline right around the corner.

Derrick Henry will turn 30 years old in January, so he doesn’t really fit the Titans’ timeline anymore. As a result, he is viewed as a prime trade candidate.

The three-time Pro Bowler has rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry thus far this season. No, he isn’t the same 2,000+ yard back from several years ago, but he remains a productive rusher who could absolutely move the needle for a team like the Cowboys.
