The Denver Broncos released quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday, which comes as a surprise to no one.
Following the release, Wilson took to social media to thank the city of Denver for his two-year run with the club and ended his statement by making a bold claim.
“Tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” Wilson posted to his X account. “God’s got me. I am excited for what’s next.”
The Broncos initially acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March 2022 with the expectation that the nine-time Pro Bowler would transform the franchise.
Instead, Wilson endured the worst season of his career during his debut campaign in the Mile High City, throwing 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
This past year, Wilson actually played some solid football, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight picks while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98.
However, it was clear that Wilson did not see eye to eye with head coach Sean Payton, and the former Super Bowl champion was benched with two games remaining in the regular season after declining to defer his injury guarantee.
At that point, the writing was on the wall for Wilson, and it was just a matter of time before he was cut.
Denver will still have to pay Wilson the $39 million he is owed in guaranteed money for 2024, meaning Wilson will make a hefty salary next season regardless of how much he signs for elsewhere.
While the 35-year-old may not have a gigantic market, there should certainly be several teams who express interest in him, with the Pittsburgh Steelers frequently mentioned as the most likely landing spot.
We will see what the future holds for Russell Wilson in the coming weeks.
