Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson caught some by surprise on Friday morning when he had what was called an “exploratory meeting” with the New York Giants. He then flew out of New Jersey to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was expected.
But Wilson may also be meeting with another club soon: the Las Vegas Raiders.
The 35-year-old is still technically under contract with the Broncos, but Denver has announced that it will be releasing him and has given him permission to speak with other teams.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that one of those teams could be the Raiders, who have seen Wilson twice a year for the past couple of seasons as the Broncos’ AFC West division rivals.
The fact that Las Vegas may be having a conversation with Wilson at some point does not come as much of a surprise.
Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has made it abundantly clear that the team is looking for an upgrade under center, as Las Vegas does not seem very committed to Aidan O’Connell.
Wilson spent the first decade of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, making nine trips to the Pro Bowl while also leading the club to a Super Bowl championship.
The Broncos then acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade two years ago with the expectation that he would bring the franchise back to prominence.
Instead, Wilson struggled through the worst season of his career in his debut campaign in Denver, and while he certainly looked better in 2023, the Broncos went just 8-9 and missed the playoffs.
There is a belief that Wilson still has something left in the tank and can flourish with another organization that would better utilize his talents.
Perhaps the Raiders, who house an impressive wide receiver duo of Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, can provide Russell Wilson with a better opportunity.
