The San Francisco 49ers acquired edge rusher Chase Young in a blockbuster trade deadline deal with the Washington Commanders last week, and Young is already excited to be part of a new team.
“Culture,” Young said when asked about the difference between the 49ers and his former club (via David Lombardi of The Athletic). “I see why they win. The details of each play, the details of each assignment are much greater. I see why they win.”
San Francisco sent a third-round draft pick to the Commanders in exchange for Young, who will be re-joining Nick Bosa, his former college teammate at Ohio State, along the Niners’ defensive front.
Young was originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and ended up being a major disappointment for the Commanders.
He did enjoy an impressive rookie campaign, posting 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. However, the following year, Young tore his ACL nine games into the season, and in 2022, he was limited to just three contests due to his recovery and other issues. Over the course of those two years, Young compiled just 1.5 sacks.
The 24-year-old has had a bit of a resurgence this season, as he has totaled 15 tackles and five sacks in seven games (he missed the season opener due to a stinger he sustained in preseason).
Young is set to be a free agent at the end of the year, so Washington decided to part ways with him now in order to recoup some value for him before losing the pass rusher for nothing in the spring.
The 49ers could certainly use some help in their own pass rush, as they have totaled just 18 sacks through their first eight games. That ranks toward the bottom of the league.
Chase Young should absolutely be of assistance in that area.
San Francisco is 5-3 and will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
