The San Francisco 49ers are showing trade interest in Washington Commanders edge rusher Montez Sweat, according to Josh Taylor of Bleacher Report.
Taylor adds that the 49ers made be prepared to offer the Commanders a couple of third-round draft picks.
On Saturday, it was reported that the Commanders were likely to part with either Sweat or fellow edge rusher Chase Young ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. The fact that Washington lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday surely made it more likely that the club will make a move.
The 49ers are in surprising need of a pass rusher, as they have logged a very mediocre 18 sacks through their first eight games. Moreover, San Francisco has now lost three games in a row, most recently falling to the Cincinnati Bengals this past weekend. Clearly, the team needs to add some pieces, and Sweat would be a great piece to add.
Thus far in 2023, Sweat has totaled 32 tackles, 6.5 sacks and a couple of forced fumbles and is on pace to have the best season of his career.
The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was originally selected by Washington with the 26th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Sweat got off to a great start, posting 50 tackles, seven sacks and a pair of forced fumbles during his rookie campaign. He followed that up by registering 45 tackles and a career-high nine sacks during his sophomore year.
Overall, Sweat has been one of the Commanders’ most consistent players since he entered the league, both in terms of health and production. He did miss seven games in 2021, but otherwise, Montez Sweat played full campaigns in three of his first four NFL seasons and has played in every contest in 2023.
Washington fell to 3-5 with its loss to the Eagles in Week 8 and has now dropped four of its last five games, putting its playoff hopes in doubt.
