Sean McDermott Makes Bold Claim On Bills’ Super Bowl Hopes

Sean McDermott took over as head coach of the Buffalo Bills back in 2017.

Since then, the Bills have made the playoffs six times, including an active streak of five straight years. They have yet to make it to the Super Bowl, and they have only made it to the AFC Championship Game once.

As a result, McDermott is now hearing the whispers about his inability to take Buffalo on a deep playoff run in spite of his regular-season success.

However, he is remaining confident that the he and the Bills will get the job done one day.

“It’s not a matter of if. It’s just a matter of when,” McDermott said of winning a Super Bowl, via Tim Graham of The Athletic. “That is the relentless pursuit.”

This past years, Buffalo reeled off five consecutive wins to end the regular season with a rather improbable AFC East division title. It then defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

It marked the third time the Bills had lost to the Chiefs in the postseason in the last four years, but McDermott is not ready to throw in the towel.

“I believe we’re doing things the right way,” said McDermott. “You only fail if you quit, and I’ve never done that. I’ve never been about that. Whatever it is, you always figure it out. You always find a way to get there.”

The 50-year-old understands the goal that lies ahead.

“The only thing left to do for us at this point is win an AFC championship and win a Super Bowl, which is pretty darn good,” he said. “There’s not too many organizations that can say that over the last seven years. We’ve done everything else you can do, and that is what gets us out of bed in the morning.”

Saying you’re going to do it is one thing; actually going out and doing it is another.

We’ll see if Sean McDermott can finally get Buffalo over the hump in 2024.
