New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was sidelined during his team’s 14-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night due to a neck injury.
Sports medicine physician Jesse Morse has provided some more details on Jones’ ailment, and the prognosis doesn’t look too great.
Morse says that based on the pain Jones has been feeling, the signal-caller is more than likely dealing with a pinched nerve or a herniated disc. Morse adds that it is essentially sciatica of the neck.
He also notes that he wouldn’t be surprised if Jones’ issue lingers for weeks and says that there is a very high likelihood of re-injury.
This is the second time Jones has dealt with a neck injury, as he missed the final six games of 2021 as a result of a similar problem.
After enjoying somewhat of a breakout season last year where Jones led the Giants to their first playoff berth since the 2016-17 campaign and their first postseason win since the club last won the Super Bowl in February 2012, Jones has struggled mightily in 2023.
In five games this season, the 26-year-old has thrown for 884 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 68.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 71.7. He has not thrown a touchdown pass since Week 2.
This comes on the heels of New York handing Jones a lucrative four-year, $160 million contract extension back in the spring.
With Daniel Jones potentially sidelined for the foreseeable future, Tyrod Taylor will handle signal-calling duties for the Giants. Taylor went 24-for-36 with 200 yards in the loss to the Bills on Sunday evening. He also carried the ball five times for 24 yards.
New York is now just 1-5 on the season and will take on the suddenly hot New York Jets next weekend.
