Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson can’t seem to catch a break.
In Week 2, Richardson suffered a concussion during his team’s win over the Houston Texans and ended up sidelined the following week as a result. He returned in Week 4, but then on Sunday afternoon, Richardson sustained a right AC sprain in his shoulder during the Colts’ victory over the Tennessee Titans and had to leave the game.
Physical therapist Jeff Mueller is expecting Richardson to miss 1-2 games as a result of the injury. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr suffered a similar injury in Week 3. While Carr has not missed any time, Mueller explicitly states that Richardson’s case looked worse.
Richardson had gone 9-for-12 with 75 yards before exiting.
On the season overall, the 21-year-old has thrown for 577 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while completing 59.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 87.3. In addition, he has carried the ball 25 times for 136 yards and four scores.
Richardson, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was selected by Indianapolis with the fourth overall pick of the NFL Draft back in the spring.
While the youngster has certainly flashed superstar potential in the early going, he may have to make some changes to his game, as his aggressive play style makes him very vulnerable to injuries.
The good news for the Colts is that Gardner Minshew is a very capable backup and has won all three of his appearances this season, so if Anthony Richardson is sidelined for an extended period of time, Indy will be in good hands.
Minshew went 11-for-14 with 155 yards against the Titans. He has totaled 553 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions this season.
The Colts are 3-2 and will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in a pivotal AFC South clash next Sunday.
