Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs made a lot of headlines recently. There were mixed reports about how much he was participating in the team’s mandatory minicamp last week or if he was even present at all.

It led to a lot of speculation about what was going on in Orchard Park between the Bills and their star receiver. As the days have gone on, we have gotten a little more insight into what was bothering Stefon Diggs.

According to star quarterback Josh Allen, the issues between Stefon Diggs and the team weren’t football related. Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, it was solely football related as the All-Pro was reportedly frustrated with his role in the offense and lack of input in play calling according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

That is something tough for a lot of people to understand. If you look at Diggs’ production since he was traded to Buffalo from the Minnesota Vikings, it would seem his role in the offense is a substantial one.

He has at least 154 targets in all three seasons, earning a Pro Bowl nod in all three campaigns and even leading the NFL with 1,535 receiving yards in 2020. He has increased his touchdown production each season as well.

The only player who has received more targets than Stefon Diggs since his arrival in Buffalo is Davante Adams. So, it is hard to surmise what more he could be seeking. His lack of involvement during the team’s Divisional Round loss to the Cincinnati Bengals could have certainly ruffled his feathers, as he caught only four passes for 35 yards.

The play-calling issue could stem from Stefon Diggs’ relationship with Ken Dorsey, according to Volin. Dorsey was tasked with replacing Brian Daboll, who took the head coaching job with the New York Giants last offseason.

Changes like that could certainly lead to a player not being happy with his situation after getting used to things being done one way. But, things got serious enough between Stefon Diggs and the team that head coach Sean McDermott canceled the last day of minicamp last week.

Hopefully, the two sides can get on the same page and come to a resolution. Buffalo needs Stefon Diggs in the lineup to reach the heights they are capable of achieving as he is a star at the wide receiver position.

Without him, things could get ugly in the passing game. The Bills were already in the market for some wide receiver help and that was with Stefon Diggs being involved. Without him, they would be relying on Gabriel Davis, Khalil Shakur, Trent Sherfield and Deonte Harty as their top four options at wide receiver.
