The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Miami Dolphins during Super Wild Card Weekend at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. It was one of the coldest playoff games ever recorded with negative temperatures at kickoff and the feel-like temperature getting around -30.

It was unsafe conditions to be outside in, as advisories were shared to cover up all extremities and faces. Photos and videos went viral of drinks fans had freezing nearly instantly to show just how cold it was outside.

Throughout the game, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid saw his mustache grow icicles. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes saw his helmet shatter when he collided with a Dolphins’ defender, requiring him to change to a backup helmet, which was frozen.

Anyone who attended the game was knowingly taking a risk with their well-being. Being outdoors in those temperatures are not safe and unfortunately, some people learned that the hard way.

According to FOX 4 KC, there were nearly 70 calls placed as first-responders dealt with hypothermia related calls at the game. A spokesperson for a Kansas City Fire Department shared the information and about half of the 69 calls were hypothermia related. Those numbers don’t include anyone who went to the first aid station inside the stadium, so there could have been other incidents that were dealt with at Arrowhead.

Out of those calls placed, 15 people were taken to the hospital to be treated for ailments. Seven of those people needed to be treated for hypothermia, while three were dealing with frostbite. Hopefully all of those people are okay, as health-related events had to be expected given the arctic temperatures in the Chiefs and Dolphins were playing in.

At least a large portion of the fans who braved the cold went home happy. The Chiefs defeated the Dolphins 26-7, advancing onto the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs where they will head on the road and face the Buffalo Bills

The Bills had weather impact their game as well, as it was pushed back one day from Sunday to Monday afternoon. They ended up defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-17 to set up another chapter in the rivalry between Mahomes and Josh Allen.
