Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has named Will Levis the team’s starting quarterback moving forward.
“We’re going to go with Will,” Vrabel said, via Teresa Walker of The Associated Press. “We think that’s the best opportunity for our football team right now and see where he’s at. I think Ryan will progress through here this week — I think, and [I’m] hopeful — to be a backup for us and prepare as a starter. But that’s where we’re at right now.”
Levis stepped in under center in Week 7 as a result of an ankle injury to veteran signal-caller Ryan Tannehill. However, even with Tannehill getting healthy, Vrabel has decided to stick with Levis.
“I shared that with the team and had a conversation with everybody involved. So, that’s what that’ll look like,” added Vrabel.
Levis had a spectacular debut two weeks ago, going 19-for-29 with 238 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the Atlanta Falcons. He was less magnificent last Thursday, as he went 22-for-39 with 262 yards and an interception in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, the rookie has obviously done enough to catch Vrabel’s attention.
“I think that there’s clearly something there,” Vrabel said of Levis, via Turron Davenport of ESPN. “We want to be able to continue to work with him and progress, and develop, and win. And that’s how you get better. You only get better by going our there and playing — especially at that position.”
Will Levis, who played his collegiate football at both Penn State and the University of Kentucky, was selected by the Titans in the second round of the NFL Draft back in the spring.
The 24-year-old will look to improve his record as a starter to 2-1 when he and the Titans head on the road to battle the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.
Tennessee is 3-5 on the season.
