In spite of incessant rumors that have suggested otherwise, the Tennessee Titans apparently won’t be trading running back Derrick Henry.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Titans have met with Henry and have told him that they intend to keep him.
Schefter adds that this does not necessarily mean that the star halfback is a lock to remain with Tennessee, as league sources believe that it would make plenty of sense for the Titans to move Henry ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Tennessee is just 2-4 heading into its Week 8 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons and has not come close to resembling a contender; not even in the weak AFC South.
As a result, many have been expecting the Titans to trade Henry, who is slated to be a free agent at the end of the year. Tennessee appears headed toward an inevitable rebuild, and with Henry turning 30 years old in December, he doesn’t fit the franchise’s timeline any longer.
Henry, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Titans in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
After a slow start his first couple of seasons, Henry broke out in 2018, rushing for 1,059 yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
Henry then went on to lead the league in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns each of the next two years, maxing out at 2,027 yards and 17 scores in 2020.
Injuries limited the Yulee, Fl. native to just eight games in 2021, but the following season, Henry racked up 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Henry has made three Pro Bowl appearances while earning one First-Team All-Pro selection.
Through his first six games of 2023, Derrick Henry has logged 425 yards and three scores on the ground, registering 4.3 yards per tote.
