Redshirt sophomore quarterback Charles Wright from the Texas Longhorns has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, as announced on his Twitter account.

In his statement, Wright expressed his lifelong dream of playing for the Longhorns and earning his degree at the university. Despite the strong emotional attachment to the team and school, he emphasized the need to take a chance on himself and explore other opportunities.

“I dreamed of playing for the Longhorns my entire life. Getting the opportunity to do so while earning my degree was an absolute dream… It’s certainly hard to leave a place that has meant so much to me my entire life but I have to take a chance on myself now.”

Wright recently graduated in December and still has two seasons of eligibility remaining, making him an attractive prospect for other college football programs.

The backstory of Charles Wright’s recruitment is intertwined with that of the current Longhorns starting quarterback, Quinn Ewers.

In 2020, when Ewers committed to Texas, it prompted Jalen Milroe to decommit from the Longhorns and commit to Alabama shortly thereafter. This left former head coach Tom Herman in search of a quarterback for the 2021 recruiting class. In a quick turn of events, Wright received an offer from Texas and decided to join the team, ultimately signing with the Longhorns.

Wright, who hails from Austin High School, was rated as a consensus three-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He stood at 6’1″ and weighed 203 pounds, occupying the role of the third-string quarterback during his redshirt year. However, he came close to making a starting appearance in 2022 when both Quinn Ewers and backup Hudson Card suffered injuries.

Despite the opportunity against UTSA, Louisiana-Monroe, and Oklahoma, he did not attempt a pass during those games. In 2023, he served as the fourth-string quarterback and did not see any game action.

A notable highlight for Wright came in October when right tackle Christian Jones praised him as one of the toughest players on the team.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the Longhorns will have three scholarship quarterbacks, including the expected return of Quinn Ewers for his third season. They will also feature rising redshirt freshman Arch Manning and Trey Owens, a signee for the 2024 season.
