Pros
As previously stated, Blake Martinez is only 26 years old. Having young talent at the linebacker position is key for any NFL team. With linebackers being asked to do so much more within the position in regards to coverage and run support, youth plays a big factor into being able to do so.
Over the past three years, Martinez has become a tackling machine for the Packers. In 2017 and 2018, he posted 144 total tackles, with 96 and 91 respectively coming as solo tackles. Last season, we saw him post career numbers in both categories, with 155 total tackles and 97 solo tackles. That ranked him second in the NFL in both categories at the linebacker position, behind only Bobby Wagner in total tackles and Zach Cunningham in solo tackles.
Outside of Cory Littleton and Joe Schobert, who rank seventh and ninth, the Packers will not be able to find someone who has that combination of youth and sure tackling ability within free agency. Both Littleton and Schobert lean more on the coverage side with their linebacker abilities, and are going to garner top dollar on the market as well.
The Packers would be better off re-signing their home grown talent who is familiar with the system and one of the best tacklers in the league, as opposed to trying to fill that void through alternative free agent options.
