This Patriots-Rams Trade Sends Allen Robinson To New England

The last few seasons have been very difficult ones for wide receiver Allen Robinson. After recording back-to-back 1,100+ yard seasons in 2019 and 2020, he has the two least productive seasons of his career outside of 2017, when he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 while playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Throughout his career, Allen Robinson has played with some inconsistent quarterback play. That hadn’t ever slowed him down from producing some big numbers. It was only two years ago when the Chicago Bears placed the franchise tag on him, that teams were lining up to acquire him.

Now, Allen Robinson is considered an albatross contract for the Los Angeles Rams. He was their big-ticket signing in free agency in 2022 but turned out to be arguably the biggest free agent bust of the year. The two sides agreed to a three-year, $46.5 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.

Allen Robinson is due $18 million in each of the next two years, which wouldn’t be too bad of a number if he was producing as he did a few years ago. The Rams gave him permission to seek a trade, but it is hard to imagine that they will be able to get much in return for him.

If the Rams are willing to eat some of his salary, the draft compensation return will be greater. But, if they want to just clear the money off of their books, they will get a late Day 3 pick at the best.

Who could step up to the plate and acquire Allen Robinson? One possible landing spot is with the New England Patriots. The Patriots lost wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency but were able to sign JuJu Smith-Schuster to take his spot.

Smith-Schuster is a good addition, but that shouldn’t stop New England from making moves. They could use another weapon and Allen Robinson would make for a low-risk, high-reward acquisition.

We have seen what he is capable of when healthy despite underwhelming quarterback play, which is how the performance of Mac Jones can be categorized from 2022. A sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft should be enough to get a deal done as it seems as if the Rams just want to move Allen Robinson off their roster at this point.

Entering his age-30 and with zero guaranteed dollars on his contract beyond 2023, this could be the last chance for Allen Robinson to prove he can still produce and help a team win games.
