All of the discussions that have involved the Green Bay Packers this offseason have centered around the quarterback position. It sounds like the franchise is ready to move on from Aaron Rodgers and hand the reins of the offense over to Jordan Love.

It would be the dawn of a new era in Green Bay with the 2020 first-rounder taking over the starting job. But, regardless of who is the starting quarterback, one thing is for sure; this offense needs a few more weapons added to it.

During the 2022 offseason, wide receivers Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling were on the move. This offseason, wide receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb are free agents along with tight end Robert Tonyan. That is a lot of firepower to potentially lose in back-to-back seasons.

While the Packers are a little better prepared this time around as they have Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs entering their second seasons, adding some more veterans to the mix certainly wouldn’t hurt.

One player that would be a perfect fit for them in free agency is tight end, Dalton Schultz. After receiving the franchise tag from the Dallas Cowboys during the 2022 offseason, the team opted to use it this year on running back Tony Pollard. That means Schultz will likely depart and be one of the more sought-after pass catchers on the open market.

Schultz wasn’t as productive in 2022 as he was in 2021 as he battled through injuries and some inconsistencies with quarterback Dak Prescott. He still managed to catch 57 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season. In the playoffs he was excellent as well, catching 12 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

That playoff performance is a preview of what Schultz can provide when healthy. For a few weeks during the 2022 regular season, he was one of the best tight ends in the league, so he would certainly be worth the price tag in free agency.

In 2021, he also produced at an elite level. His DYAR via Football Outsiders was fourth amongst tight ends and he registered a catch rate of 75 percent, hauling in 78 receptions for 808 yards. Also an excellent run blocker, Schultz is the total package and someone that would upgrade the Packers’ offense in multiple ways.
