The Minnesota Vikings have had one of the most consistent offenses in the NFL since Kirk Cousins took over as the starting quarterback. Kirk Cousins signed a deal with the team in free agency in 2018, becoming the first player in NFL history to receive a fully guaranteed deal.
He earned that kind of contract with some solid performances with the Washington Commanders. A fourth-round pick out of Michigan State in 2012, Kirk Cousins was originally slated to be the backup to Robert Griffin III, who went second overall in that draft. But, injuries derailed Griffin, forcing Kirk Cousins into a full-time starting role in 2015.
Since that time, the former Spartan has been a steady performer. While not considered among the elite group of players at the position, he is certainly someone you can win games with in the right situation. He has also accomplished something no other player in the NFL has since taking over as a full-time starter seven seasons ago.
In that span, Kirk Cousins has thrown for 25+ touchdowns in each season. According to Sunday Night Football on NBC on Twitter, he is the only player to accomplish that feat since 2015.
Over that time span, Kirk Cousins has also made the Pro Bowl four times, proving that he is one of the better quarterbacks in this league despite sometimes getting overlooked. He just missed surpassing the 4,000-yard plateau every one of those seasons as well, with 2019 being the only year that he missed.
Of course, some of the reason that Kirk Cousins is overlooked by fans and people in the media is that he lacks playoff success. He has only been on four playoff teams and one of them was as a backup.
In the three opportunities that he had as the starter, Kirk Cousins has gone 1-3, never advancing beyond the Divisional Round. While the lack of wins in the playoffs is certainly a blemish on his resume, it shouldn’t take away from the fact that he has been one of the most consistent regular season performers the league has seen in the last seven seasons.
