The Minnesota Vikings offense is going to look drastically different in 2024 than it did in 2023. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has his work out for him trying to find a replacement for quarterback Kirk Cousins, but he isn’t the only multi-year player who is being changed.
The Minnesota backfield is also going to look a little bit different. Alexander Mattison, who signed a two-year deal to remain with the team last offseason as Dalvin Cooks’ replacement, was released earlier in the offseason.
There are options to turn to on the roster, as Ty Chandler was solid when called upon later in the season. Cam Akers is a restricted free agent and the team also has DeWayne McBride waiting in the wings.
NFL News & Rumors: Aaron Jones, 2024 NFL Free Agency, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings Updates
But, if the opportunity presents itself to add an established veteran at a good price, you have to jump at it. That is what the Vikings did on Tuesday morning when they decided to sign former Green Bay Packers star, Aaron Jones.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Jones and the Vikings have agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal. His agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha confirmed the deal, as he becomes the latest Packer turned Viking.
It would not be surprising if some revenge is what motivated Jones to leap the Vikings. After taking a big pay cut to remain in Green Bay last offseason, to get released in the fashion he was this year certainly can hurt.
The Packers signed Josh Jacobs, the league’s 2022 rushing leader, to take over their backfield instead. You can be sure Jones will be motivated to perform in the two NFC North matchups between the Packers and Vikings in the 2024 season.
NFL News & Rumors: Aaron Jones, 2024 NFL Free Agency, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings Updates
Jones showed during the stretch of the 2023 season that he has plenty left in the tank to offer a team. He ran for 100+ yards in five straight games, including the postseason and was integral in Green Bay sneaking into the postseason.
He now joins a loaded skill position group with the Vikings. Jones, along with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson is one of the most talented and dynamic skill position groupings in the NFL. All Minnesota is missing is a quarterback.
