New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen came into the 2023 offseason with clear goals for the offense. He wanted to upgrade the weapons around quarterback Daniel Jones while also providing the offense with more speed. It would be fair to say he accomplished that goal.

During free agency, Schoen landed wide receiver Parris Campbell and acquired tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders via trade. Both players are set to play prominent roles in the offense, and Waller has stood out in training camp thus far.

Another player who has stood out in camp has been rookie wide receiver, Jalin Hyatt. A third-round pick of the Giants out of Tennessee, some draft analysts believed that the former Volunteer could go in the first round. He slipped to the third, where the Giants made a trade up the board to snag him.

Coming into the NFL, some people believed that Hyatt was a one-trick pony. Albeit, that one trick was as elite as elite gets as Hyatt’s speed is unmatched. It is what drew the Giants to him and it has been on display plenty of times.

He reportedly has been clocked at 24 miles per hour in practice, which would be the fastest recorded time for a player in the NFL. Alas, Hyatt is also looking to show that he is more than just a straight-line speed player as one coach on the Dallas Cowboys insulated during the pre-draft process.

So far in practice, his route-running has been impressing coaches as much as his speed. He is looking to prove all his doubters wrong and carve out a role in the Giants’ offense from the get-go.

Last season the Giants’ offense was sorely missing players who could create big plays down the field. The only real threat they had was Darius Slayton, but Hyatt looks ready to contribute in that role from Day 1.

Quickly ascending the depth chart, Hyatt has a chance to be in the lineup right out of the gate. If he can continue working on and improving his footwork and route running, a spot in the starting lineup could be attainable during his rookie season.
