Why Xavier Rhodes Is Exactly What The Colts Needed
Let’s be honest, the Colts have had some issues at the cornerback position over the last few years. They have tried to add young talent in the NFL Draft, but none of those guys have stepped up to be a legitimate No. 1 cover cornerback.
Rhodes, on the other hand, has a proven track record of being a capable No. 1 corner. At one point in time just a couple short years ago, Rhodes was one of the most feared corners in the entire NFL.
Back in 2016, Rhodes racked up huge numbers with five interceptions and 11 defended passes. In 2017, he had another good year with two interceptions and 10 defended passes.
In a recent interview, Rhodes talked about the last couple of years where he has struggled. He is already ready to move on with the Colts after his tenure with he Vikings.
“The last two years, it’s been a battle, especially with injuries,” Rhodes said. “So being that, it’s football; you’re out there playing, you can’t make no excuses for yourself. When you’re on that field you’ve just gotta play to the best of your ability, and last year wasn’t my best season. So I accepted that, and now that the Vikings moved on from that I’m playing for the Colts.”
At 30 years of age, Rhodes still has some good football left in him. He is a physical corner and has always been able to make plays on the football. For a team who desperately needed a playmaker at cornerback, Rhodes is a massive addition.
Granted, he may never bounce back to being a top-10 cornerback in the NFL. But, both Rhodes and the Colts believe he is destined to have a very good 2020 season.
Assuming he does put together a good season, the Colts and Rhodes could work hard to get a two or three-year deal done next offseason. He was brought in to be a difference maker and a leader and that is exactly what Rhodes will focus on doing.
Rhodes could end up helping the Colts turn a weakness into a strength. He certainly has the talent and ability to do so.
