Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is currently under a contract that pays him $40 million per season, set to expire after the 2024 NFL season.

Despite facing criticism, Prescott, now in his eighth NFL season, is delivering the best performance of his career, heading towards an impressive tally of over 30 touchdown passes for the year. The reduction in turnovers compared to the previous season has contributed to the Cowboys’ strong position in the race for the NFC East title, positioning them well for a significant playoff presence.

As is customary with successful teams, the question of a quarterback’s contract extension often arises. Prescott’s current deal is nearing its end, and signs point towards the Cowboys opting for an extension in the upcoming offseason.

CBS Sports NFL reporter Jonathan Jones spoke out on what could come next between the Cowboys and Prescott.

“Sources tell CBS Sports that while Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said the team is open to extending Prescott during this current season, there has been no conversation between the two sides about doing so. Instead, they’ll focus on the offseason to hammer something out. The 2024 season marks the end of Prescott’s four-year, $160 million contract he signed in the 2021 offseason. That deal came together after nearly two years of negotiating and a franchise tag for the former fourth-round pick.”

Currently, four quarterbacks are earning at least $50 million per season, and Prescott is likely to seek a deal in that range. While this might seem steep, the consistent rise in the NFL salary cap and players consistently striving to set new benchmarks in their respective positions could make a $50 million per year deal for Prescott not as surprising.

Considering Prescott’s outstanding performance and his potential shot at the NFL MVP award, the Cowboys would be wise to pursue a substantial extension for their quarterback. The investment in Prescott reflects his status as one of the premier quarterbacks in the league, and such a move could solidify the team’s competitive edge and increase their chances for a deep playoff run.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds between these two parties. But, it seems likely that Dak Prescott is about to get paid by the Cowboys.
