Patrick Mahomes’ father found himself in legal trouble on Saturday night in Texas, just a week prior to the highly anticipated Super Bowl taking place in Las Vegas.
The father of the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback was arrested for a third time, this time on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI). If convicted, he may potentially face a sentence ranging from two to ten years behind bars.
Despite this legal setback, there’s a silver lining for Patrick Mahomes Sr. in the short term. A judge has opted not to impose a travel ban on him, allowing him the possibility of attending the Super Bowl in support of his son.
“Judge James Meredith — who handled the case in Smith County, Texas on Sunday following Mahomes Sr.’s DWI arrest — tells us he didn’t impose any travel ban on the elder Mahomes as part of his bond conditions … paving the way for Dad to watch his son play in Las Vegas in SB LVIII.”
The judge’s decision to permit his travel is a commendable gesture, demonstrating empathy during a challenging time for the Mahomes family. However, as noted by TMZ, it remains uncertain whether Patrick Mahomes himself will want his father in attendance at the Super Bowl, given the recent troubling incident.
This marks the third occasion that Mahomes’ father has faced DWI charges, a matter taken very seriously in Texas, where strict penalties are enforced for such offenses.
The Super Bowl showdown between the Chiefs and the 49ers is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. E.T. on Sunday, February 11, with CBS airing the game. The circumstances surrounding Patrick Mahomes Sr.’s legal situation add an unexpected layer of complexity to the already highly anticipated event.
