Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings may have won their second game of the season in Week 6, but it has not done much to quiet all of the trade speculation surrounding the team.
Given that their two victories on the year have come at the hands of the Carolina Panthers and, most recently, the Chicago Bears, you can see why people aren’t exactly putting a whole lot of confidence in a potential Vikings turnaround.
Obviously, the biggest name that Minnesota could potentially move is quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is set to hit free agency at the end of the season.
Cousins is 35 years old, and with the Vikings appearing to be headed for a rebuild in the spring, it seems relatively likely that the veteran will not be under center for Minnesota in 2024.
Taking those factors into consideration, it stands to reason that the Vikings could move Cousins between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Anthony Amador of Game 7 names two teams who seem to be frontrunners to land Cousins in a potential trade: the New York Jets and the New England Patriots.
The Jets were named as a potential suitor in the early stages of the season, as Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the first offensive series of Week 1. The Patriots have become more of a thought over the past three weeks, as Mac Jones has struggled mightily and was benched in Weeks 4 and 5.
It should be noted that Cousins has a no-trade clause, and when asked about it last week, Cousins said that his focus was on the Bears.
In spite of the Vikings’ struggles, Kirk Cousins has actually been terrific this season, leading the NFL in both completions (158) and touchdowns (14) through the first six weeks. He has thrown for 1,679 yards while completing 67.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 100.6.
