3 Free Agent Running Backs Named Possible Fits For Browns

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have not been able to catch a break regarding injuries on the offensive side of the ball this season. First, it was running back Nick Chubb going down with a gruesome knee injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.

Joining him on the sidelines has been quarterback Deshaun Watson. He has been unable to stay on the field because of a shoulder injury. That has led to rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker starting games this season.

Most recently, it was another running back who went down with an injury. Jerome Ford, who was taking over the backfield for Chubb, suffered a dreaded high ankle sprain. Those sprains can linger for weeks, meaning Cleveland could be in the market for another tailback.

They brought Kareem Hunt back earlier this season and have Pierre Strong Jr. on the roster, but that is it. There isn’t currently a running back on the practice squad, meaning one if not two, players will be added soon.

Over at Factory of Sadness, a list of potential running back additions has been shared. The first option is Mark Ingram, who is currently doing analyst work. He did play for the New Orleans Saints last season, so he isn’t too far removed but it is hard to imagine he’d give up his gig to be a backup on the Browns.

The next suggestion was Darrel Williams. He was a versatile weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in his career and has Super Bowl experience from being with the team. He is a capable runner and pass catcher, as he can fill whatever role it is that Cleveland needs that week. Williams played in only six games with the Arizona Cardinals last season but averaged a healthy 4.9 yards per carry.

Last but not least, Ronald Jones was a suggested target for the Browns. Jones was suspended earlier in the season but has since been released by the Dallas Cowboys. There have been some flashes of brilliance from Jones, a former second-round pick, in his career.

Still only 26 years old, the Browns could catch some lightning in a bottle with Jones if he were to be brought in. He would make for a worthwhile risk as the third running back on the depth chart as he brings Super Bowl experience to the table as well.
