Reach the Market Again in 2021

The greatest advantage to signing a one-year deal from Jadeveon Clowney’s perspective would be to reach free agency again next offseason. That would enable him to find a significant long-term deal with a team he truly wants to commit to for the next few years.

After holding out for the asking price he was seeking, Clowney has seen the market develop in an unfavorable way. The teams willing to pay him a significant amount in a contract offer are apparently not destinations he prefers and the contenders don’t have major cap space.

Taking less money for one season to play for a contender could help Clowney to capitalize on a fresh market landscape next offseason. A team like the Saints who are known to get creative with the salary cap should be on the top of the list of options for this reason.

It wouldn’t be a decision free of a risk considering the possibility the NFL plays without fans in the stands, or at least in a significantly reduced capacity. This could cause the league’s salary cap to decline for the near future since there would be a decline in revenue.
