3 ways Javon Kinlaw can impact the 49ers in his rookie season in 2020

Help Keep Other Players Fresh

Given how important the front-seven is for the 49ers’ defense, it’s important to keep their main talents fresh and be prepared in the event of an injury. That’s where the selection of Javon Kinlaw at No. 14 will arguably help San Francisco the most immediately.

The 49ers mostly utilized Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead along with Deforest Buckner last season as they each exceeded at least 75 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. That helped Dee Ford to stay in more of a pass rusher specialist role on limited snaps.

With Buckner no longer with the team, the 49ers headed into the NFL Draft with a real need to bolster their defensive line rotation. Now they won’t have to rely as much on Solomon Thomas, Ronald Blair, or D.J. Jones as they would have otherwise.

If the 49ers were to experience an injury to either Bosa or Armstead, they will at least have a deeper rotation to turn to and help insulate themselves from the impact. Of course, there would still be a decline in production regardless, but it just won’t be as severe now.
