Jason Garrett is Gone
The negative impact Jason Garrett’s coaching had on the Cowboys can not be stated enough. They finally decided to move on from him in the offseason and hired former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy as his replacement.
The main issue that held the Cowboys back last season was an inability to defeat teams with a winning record. For reference, it wasn’t until Week 15 when Dallas defeated the Rams that they defeated a winning-team. A key factor in this was a lack of effective coaching squandering winnable games.
Let’s not forget how close a lot of the games were against winning teams for the Cowboys in 2019. They lost to the Saints, Patriots, and Vikings all by fewer than five points. They were just a few small sequences from potentially being 11-5 despite coming up short in other matchups.
There was enough talent on the Cowboys roster for them to be dominant when things were clicking and they could transcend Garrett’s coaching at times. When matchups required legitimate coaching savvy, that’s when they came up short since they lacked that.
