49ers’ Brock Purdy Does Something Only Aaron Rodgers Has Ever Done

The San Francisco 49ers have not missed a beat despite having to start their third different quarterback this season. Brock Purdy stepped into the lineup for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins and had a very solid performance. He completed 67.6 percent of his passes in relief of Garoppolo for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Many people wondered if that level of success was repeatable for Purdy, who was Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft. Not only has he been able to repeat that level of performance, but he has also actually exceeded it in the next two games.

Purdy was great in his first career start, going up against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 76.2 percent of his passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, adding another rushing score as he was pulled late in the game because of the blowout.

In Week 15, the 49ers headed on the road for a huge matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. It was not only the first time that Purdy would play outside of Levi’s Stadium in his career, but it was on a short week as it was on Thursday Night Football.

Purdy was questionable throughout the week because of injuries but was deemed good to go. Despite everything working against him, he had yet another great performance. The Iowa State product completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

Those performances put Purdy in a very rare club. His quarterback rating was 134 against the Buccaneers and 117 against the Seahawks, making him only the second player in NFL history to record a quarterback rating of 115+ in his first two career starts. The other? Future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers.

However, the situation could not be more different. Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft and was thrown into the fire with very few reps. Rodgers had three seasons to prepare for his chance as a starter after being a first-round pick in 2005 and sitting behind Brett Favre.

Like Brock Purdy and the 49ers, Rodgers and the Packers won those two games. Rodgers came back down to Earth a bit in his third start, a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Will the same thing happen to Purdy, who will face off against the Washington Commanders in Week 16? We will have to wait and see as the 49ers don’t have much left to play for the remainder of the season while Washington will have their playoff hopes on the line.
