The San Francisco 49ers lost the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night, and afterward, quarterback Brock Purdy delivered an emotional message.

“It just hurts,” Purdy said, via Matthew Davis of Heavy.com. “We have the team obviously to do it, to win the whole thing, and come up short like that. “The way things have been the last couple of years here, everyone wanted it so bad. So, I think we’re still trying to sort of gather our thoughts and everything right now.”

Purdy went 23-for-38 with 255 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

He added that “everyone in that locker room loves each other” in the wake of the 49ers’ 25-22 overtime loss.

San Francisco got off to a rather strong start on the evening, taking a 10-0 lead in the first half thanks to some obvious poise from Purdy.

However, the Niners’ offense proceeded to stall in the third quarter, as the Chiefs reeled off 13 unanswered points (which began late in the second period) to grab a 13-10 advantage.

The 49ers responded with a couple of impressive drives, but were unable to close the door.

“I’m still trying to figure it out, I’m not going to lie,” Purdy said. I think first and second down we just got to be better. You get into these third and longs and it’s tough to convert in those kinds of situations. So, just got to be better I think first and second down.”

For a 24-year-old playing in his first Super Bowl, Purdy did a fine job, but there are certainly some throws he wishes he could have had back.

“You just don’t want to give an opportunity to go down and win the game off a touchdown,” Purdy said. “When I wasn’t able to connect with them it hurt.”

The 49ers took a 22-19 lead in the extra session, only to see Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs march down the field for the game-winning touchdown on the following drive.

At the very least, this was a learning experience for Brock Purdy, who looks like he will be San Francisco’s starting quarterback for a very long time.
