5 Crazy Trades We’d Love To See Happen During 2022 NFL Offseason

While the NFL doesn’t have trades as frequently as some of the other major sports, this offseason could see several veterans changing addresses. The quarterback carousel is once again going to be in full effect, but several skill position players could be on the move as well.

Teams will be scrambling to get under the salary cap so that they can make some additions to their rosters. That could lead to some cap casualties, which teams with cap space can take full advantage of.

Trading away contracts with draft pick compensation is something that has become prevalent in the NBA and is something that we could see in the NFL this season as well. With the number of teams lacking cap space, expect some big names to be mentioned in trade rumors.

Who could end up where? Here are five crazy trades we’d like to see happen during the 2022 offseason.

5. Buffalo Bills Land Saquon Barkley

There have been a few rumors about the Buffalo Bills looking to supplement their offense with an upgrade in the backfield. Christian McCaffrey has been mentioned as a possible target, but the Panthers likely have a high asking price.

The New York Giants aren’t going to just give away Saquon Barkley, but he would certainly come at a cheaper price than McCaffrey. Also, Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll leaving the Bills for the Giants this offseason could mean a middle ground being found during negotiations with both sides being familiar with each other.

Barkley would elevate an offense that already has the makings to be the best in the league. As a dual-threat out of the backfield, he would make a good complement to Devin Singletary, who came on at the end of the 2021 season once the Bills made him their lead back.

Barkley as an RPO option alongside Josh Allen would be a handful for opponents to stop, especially if Barkley can regain some of his form and burst following three injury-marred seasons.

4. Detroit Lions Acquire Michael Thomas

There arguably isn’t a team in the NFL that needs wide receiver help as much as the Detroit Lions do. Detroit went into the 2021 season with Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman atop the depth chart and they combined to catch two passes; both by Williams before he suffered an injury, as Perriman didn’t even make the Week 1 roster.

Amon-Ran St. Brown emerged at the end of the season and adding another player opposite of him is imperative. With some cap space, the Lions will take on Michael Thomas from the New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans is in the worst cap situation in the NFL, more than $74 million over the cap. They will have to move on from some veterans to get under the cap and one of the players that could be on the move is Thomas.

Thomas was arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in 2018 and 2019 before injuries derailed him. Detroit would hope he is healthy and regains his form to give Jared Goff a legitimate No. 1 option at wide receiver.

3. Seattle Seahawks Pull Of Another Blockbuster

The Seattle Seahawks shocked the football world when they traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. It was a huge trade as the Seahawks received five draft picks and three players, one of which was quarterback Drew Lock.

If the Seahawks go into the season with Lock as their starter, they are essentially throwing in the towel saying that this is a rebuilding season. They will not be doing that, however, as Lock will be the backup to Deshaun Watson.

Watson’s off-field issues have been well documented, but there have been discussions of his trade market heating up once again. The Seahawks will use the draft capital they acquired from the Broncos and add a little more to pry Watson from Houston and have their new franchise quarterback replace Wilson.

2. New England Patriots Upgrade Wide Receiver

The New England Patriots took a chance when they turned their offense over to rookie Mac Jones in 2021. He responded well, showing that he is a more than capable game manager, helping lead the team to the postseason.

However, for him to take that next step in his development, the team needs to upgrade the weapons around him. Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor were nice signings, but neither are true No. 1 receivers and Jakobi Meyers doesn’t fit that bill either.

However, Calvin Ridley certainly would. Adding Ridley to lead the group with the aforementioned trio filling in behind him would give Jones a strong stable of receivers to get the ball to. Ridley was ascending toward being one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in 2020 before stepping away in 2021 to focus on his mental well-being.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers Vault Up Draft Board

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a new era as future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced his retirement shortly after the team was eliminated from the postseason by the Kansas City Chiefs. It will be a tall task replacing a player of his stature, but someone has to do it.

The Steelers will sign a veteran, such as Jacoby Brissett, to be the starter, but they will land their franchise quarterback of the future in the 2021 NFL Draft. They are currently sitting at No. 20, but they will make a big trade up into the top-10 to get their guy.

Pittsburgh will engage in trade talks with the New York Giants, who own the No. 5 and 7 picks in the draft. They will acquire one of those selections and pick Liberty quarterback, Malik Willis.

Willis is a true dual-threat with his rushing ability and big arm. The entire Steelers organization likes him and in a parting gift to the franchise, Kevin Colbert, the first and only general manager in franchise history who is stepping down after the draft, will provide them with their next franchise quarterback.
