Big shots were fired by Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, not only at the Philadelphia Eagles, who they defeated 42-19, but also at the rest of the NFL. By beating the Eagles, they sent a message that, at least right now, they’re the best football team in the world.
Niners quarterback Brock Purdy also sent a message of his own with arguably his best performance as a pro. He completed 19 of 27 passes and threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns, and it was another piece of evidence that he’s much more than a “system quarterback.”
As a result, his already impressive stats got a boost. He now leads everyone in five categories: passer rating, pass completion percentage, touchdowns per pass attempt, yards per pass attempt and yards per pass completion.
The Iowa State University product ran San Francisco’s offense with the precision of a Silicon Valley computer engineer, and just about everyone got to eat. The team scored a total of six touchdowns, with Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Deebo Samuel all scoring at least once. In fact, Samuel scored a total of three touchdowns — one on the ground and two off passes from Purdy.

Purdy is now the favorite or at least one of the front-running favorites to win the regular season MVP award. This was unthinkable just a few short weeks ago when the Niners lost three straight games and Purdy played not terribly but disappointingly in those games.
But he has played very well since, and he is slowly proving his doubters wrong.
More and more people believe he is the true franchise quarterback the 49ers haven’t had since Hall of Famer Steve Young was forced into retirement following the 1999 season after sustaining a concussion. Not too shabby for a man who was the last player chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft and is quickly becoming the league’s newest Cinderella story.
